Child Custody Investigations in San Diego County
Good preparation helps keep a custody assignment focused when schedules or locations change. See the surveillance example, then use this guide to prepare for a San Diego County investigation.
Selected surveillance excerpts from August 1, 2026. Faces are concealed for privacy. Watch the example, then explore how dates, observation notes and context contribute to a useful record.
Give the investigator a usable starting point
A visitation dispute may involve several places, an uncertain departure time or a last-minute change. Before a San Diego custody investigation begins, separate confirmed information from possibilities. This helps the investigator assess the proposed observation window and explain what would require a revised plan.
Confirmed details
Provide the scheduled date, starting location and identifying information requested during consultation. Flag anything that may be out of date.
Possible changes
List alternative locations or timing separately. Explain why you think a change may occur instead of presenting a guess as a certainty.
The key question
Decide whether you need to clarify an exchange, an arrival, a departure or another observable event. Each may need a different plan.
Location details matter more than a broad area
“San Diego” may mean a fixed location in the city or an assignment involving other parts of the county. Explain whether the relevant activity is in Chula Vista, National City, El Cajon, Escondido, Carlsbad, Oceanside, Encinitas or San Diego itself. Give the actual locations during consultation rather than relying on a neighborhood name alone.
If an exchange begins at one place and later activity is expected elsewhere, discuss which part matters most. Observation at the first location does not guarantee uninterrupted coverage of every later movement.

Agree on updates before the start
- Who will provide a schedule or location change?
- Which contact method should be used?
- What information is confirmed and what is tentative?
- When would an extension or revised scope need discussion?
A short, factual update is easier to use than a series of conflicting instructions during an assignment.
Understand interruptions in surveillance
The video above is an edited example of surveillance documentation, not footage identified as a San Diego County investigation. Cuts between excerpts should not be mistaken for continuous observation. In a case review, the accompanying notes help explain when observation started, ended or was interrupted.
If a person moves out of view, the report should distinguish what was seen before and after the gap from what is unknown. Ask about these limitations when reviewing photographs or video. A private detective gathers observations; the camera cannot establish activities it did not capture.
Useful preparation also means staying focused on the assignment. Tell the investigator about relevant changes without trying to direct events to produce a particular scene.
Planning questions for San Diego families
Can I arrange an investigation if I am outside San Diego?
Contact us with the local details and the dates involved. Explain who can supply accurate updates and how you would like to review the findings. The assignment still depends on local conditions and availability.
What happens if the expected activity does not occur?
The observation period may be documented without the anticipated event. Review that result before deciding whether another date or a different question would be useful.
Will every moment be recorded?
No. Visibility, movement and access can limit recording. Ask how written observations, available footage and any gaps will be distinguished in the findings.
